Mukti - Sanskrit for spiritual liberation. A 145-year-old Karoo cottage in Nieu-Bethesda, curated for those who seek beauty in the unhurried.
Built in 1879, Mukti is a Karoo cottage in the truest sense - thick walls, high ceilings, wooden floors worn smooth with more than a century of life. We renovated with care and reverence, never erasing, always listening to what the house wanted to become.
"It has a humility about it. It's a place of feelings - our approach was inspired by how we feel when we are here."
The interiors draw from the landscape - earthy, layered, alive with curated South African art, antique finds and hand-picked treasures gathered over months of auctions and vintage shops. Every room tells a story.
Mukti is rented exclusively - the whole cottage is yours. No other guests, no interruptions. Just you, the silence of the Karoo, and the fire pit under open skies.
Rich tobacco-toned walls, a large Karoo landscape in oils above the beds, antique side tables and warm wooden floors. Layered with carefully chosen South African art and inherited pieces that anchor you in place and time.
Grasscloth walls in warm wheat, a salon-hung gallery of South African works, and an earthy palette drawn directly from the veld. A king-size bed and ensuite bathroom make this a beautifully private sanctuary.
At the foot of the Sneeuberge, 50 kilometres north of Graaff-Reinet, Nieu-Bethesda is a village unlike anywhere else in South Africa. No fuel stations. No ATMs. No tarred roads. What there is, is an uncommon stillness - and a quality of light that has drawn artists and seekers for generations.
Founded as a church town in 1886, the village shares mountain spring water through ancient sluicegates still in use today. The last municipality in South Africa to receive electricity - as recently as 1991.
"Named Mukti - a Sanskrit term for spiritual liberation - this heritage cottage in the Karoo is saturated with expressive furnishings, magpie finds and earthy hues."
Mukti is priced per person per night, self-catering, on an exclusive-use basis. The whole cottage is yours — no other guests. Rates vary by season. All amounts in South African Rand (ZAR).
